Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. There is no simple, directly proportional relationship between "I have a website that sells stuff" and "I make money on-line." If there was, everyone would be doing it, correct??:)

Simple, straight-forward steps to assist you in driving traffic seem to be few and far between. And for good reason. What incentive do most people who know this information have to reveal it to those that don't know? A Good Samaritan award? Most people will agree that, although such a thing would be a nice feather in their cap, it doesn't put food on their table.

DAO - Digital Asset Optimization: What type of assets do you currently have on the web you can utilize to your advantage? By assets I mean pieces of content and/or creative you have control over and are extant on the web. If you've got nothing out there, then before you can be as successful as you should be, you must first:

Join the conversation; Start by simply responding in comment sections of newspaper articles or blogs with your real name or your company's real name.
Participate on a few social media networking sites. This assists in the process of building the foundation.
Establish a Point Of View with respect to your particular topics of expertise and make that point of view known
Find journals and publishers of a like mind to your topic of expertise and make your presence known.

Establishing these fundamental building blocks provides you with the water you will require to make waves.

When you have assets you can leverage, then you ask yourself "What are my Goals."

The answer(s) to this question brings to light the necessary strategy you will need to implement to attain your goals. This strategy should be based on the distribution of your digital assets, their positioning on the web, the relative strengths and weakness of the links to and from these assets and the optimization of them.

Your digital assets will allow you achieve your business goals best then they have be his allow you to receive the most search engine bang for your buck with regards to traffic. And let us not forget, that's what this entire exercise is about, reigning in more traffic. When you DAO is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) compliant, Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaigns, AdSense campaigns, affiliate campaigns, and SEO campaigns all have an easier time of bringing your the qualified traffic you want.

So in marketing, remember, DAO is your starting point. SEO of the DAO is your mid-point. Converting and tracking the traffic you receive as a result is your end point. Conceptualize these correctly prior to any marketing campaign and you'll go a long way to helping insure the success of your marketing efforts.
