Internet Marketing - Not a Piece of Cake Part VI

In Parts I - V we began our discussion on building an online business. We tried to impress upon the new online business owner that, although there is definitely money to be made in online marketing and that there certainly were some definite advantages of creating an online business compared to a traditional 'brick and mortar' business, it is not a 'slam dunk.'

Creating a web based business can definitely be a challenge and requires your learning and mastering several different skills. One area stands out when it comes to the importance of learniing certain skills but also in the complexity and importance of mastering this concept. In short, it's Traffic.

There are numerous ways to generate traffic to your new online business. In this article I'll provide you with a good start and then in this and future articles review some of the more critical things you need to know in order to be a success.

So here is your list not in any particular order:

1. SEO

2. Email Marketing

3. Article Marketing

4. Forum Marketing

5. Joint Venture Marketing

6. Social Networking - Twitter, MySpace, Facebook etc.

7. Video Marketing

8. Blogs

9. PPC Marketing - Google, Facebook etc.

10. Word of Mouth Viral Marketing

11. Give A Ways

and the list goes on and on.

What you may have already guessed is that I think that you need to become an expert in each of these but only one at a time but then, incorporate them all to build your 'Marketing Funnel' so that no one marketing tactic is critical to your online success.

So, let's talk a bit about Search Engine Optimization.

This is probably one of the most difficult skills to master not necessarily because it is so complicated but rather because the game changes all of the time. SEO relates to setting up your website's keywords, metatags and the like so that the search engines (like Google, Yahoo etc.) find them and index them easily.

By doing so, you hope to capture the all important first page listing in these search engines in the 'organic section'. The organize section is the listing on the left side of the page, for example, in Google. The ads at the top and on the far right are paid ads which we will discuss in future articles.

If you are new to SEO it can be a daunting task and one you can easily outsource to the professionals. Be careful not to give up the ownership of your site so that if the process doesn't work to your satisfaction you're not in a bind.

Also, if you decide to outsource, make sure you watch the results and measure, measure and then measure again. If SEO is not maintained on a constant basis you can find yourself on page 1 today and page 10 a week from now.
