If there's one thing I hate, my subscribers hate and stops newbie internet marketers in their tracks - it's niche marketing research.

And the trouble is - it's half the battle, the most important part and will make the difference between success and failure (unless you're pretty lucky, intuitive or a natural)!

Here's the easiest niche marketing research I know and use before starting and entering any niche.

Choosing the Niche - Check out Open Directories
A quick search for open directories and you'll find some of the biggest archives and compilations of online topics. All organized by category and sub-divided into smaller topics of niches. The bigger the category, the greater the interest and there's a very good chance you'll find a nice looking niche there.

As a general rule of thumb you'll want to find the topics where people have money and are likely to spend. Kids have no money so they're not likely to spend anything. Adults on the other hand spend lots of money on solving problems. Typically the health, relationships and hobby markets are best.

That's the first step for this easy niche marketing research.

How Hot is the Niche - Find Active Forums
Having drilled down through the open directory, make a note of five or so that took your eye and you have a good feeling about. Then try to find references to forums within the open directory.

Usually they'll reference some of the more popular forums, if not then you can simply have a look using your search engine. Browse the forum check that it's active with lots of users and regular comments daily. Ideally find a few active forums and make a note of them.

If there's no forums or they're very inactive then it's probably going to be a harder niche to break into and probably worth ditching it. That doesn't mean it won't work - it's just going to be a little harder.

While in the forums - look out for hot topics, common themes and problems.

Find Affiliate Products for that Niche
Ultimately this niche marketing strategy or niche marketing research is about finding winners quickly and easily. One of the surest signs of a winner is competition and affiliate programs.

Not only do they show people are spending money (especially if there are advertizements as well) these affiliate programs provide you with a means to earn extra income (or your only source of income if you don't intend on creating a product).

There should be several affiliate products you can choose from and competing with each other. Sure signs that the market is healthy. Ideally you should find a niche with high ticket and continuity programs as well.

High ticket items will pay you more as an affiliate whilst continuity programs will add stability to your income with monthly, recurring commissions. Never a bad thing!

The Simple Niche Marketing Research Strategy
Use the open directories to find popular ares of interest online. Make sure it's a hot topic with lots of people trying to find solutions to problems using the forums and then confirm that you can sell them something (or create something to sell) by looking for affiliate products.

All in the all - with a focused effort you could readily find several niches within one hour. Hot topics with lots of online interest and ready to spend money with this very simple strategy.
