Hittin' the Trail of Internet Marketing

It is 4 in the morning. Your gear was repacked so many times the night before that you're questioning and praying you remembered the ever-important roll of toilet paper. The fellas are just pulling up to your place. Time to drive a couple hours into the mountains, load up on carbs and hit the trailhead. Your excitement turns into an intense focus, as your adrenaline builds to a rush that will carry you the first few miles.

Midmorning has come around and you seem to be lagging behind your buddy that works out everyday. It's time to drop packs and B.S. a few. Back on the trail you start to pass a few dayhikers, the ones that started earlier than you but wouldn't last out here after dark. You start to fantasize about what is on that other side of the ridge; that ridge seems so far but so close at the same time. You push a little harder and get to the next clearing. Low and behold, a doe has met your arrival at her favorite drinking spot. The only thing between you and her is about a 15' wide, 6" deep stream. She saw you coming, allowed a glimpse, then took off so fast she almost pulled you into the stream.

The ridge is finally in sight. You have made it above treeline but it still looks pretty damn far away. There's still maybe a couple hundred feet in elevation gain to go, but you can't give up now. You look back and see your buddy who still smokes sitting on a rock a few hundred yards back. You feel encouraged. That small patch of snow you saw earlier now looks like a football field and only one switchback remains. You start singing Christmas carols to distract you from the pain. Looking back, you see the smoker is gaining. You're almost there, then WHACK! Snowball fight at 11,500 ft. in July. When you reach the summit, the view takes your breath away.

Internet Marketing can be just like that first backpacking trip of the summer. You worry if you have what it takes to make it on the World Wide Web with all the other aspiring climbers. It's easy to start off strong in the beginning when you're excited about your new opportunity. But when the trail gets steep and some of your teammates are already on the next ridge, will you have the perseverance to keep going until you reach the summit?

Going into the mountains alone is just foolish unless you are an expert mountaineer. If you lived in the city all your life, would it make sense to go to REI one weekend, by some camping gear and head off to the mountains alone? The same thing could be said of an aspiring entrepreneur trying to figure out internet marketing on his own. You may have an opportunity or a business system you're using to learn and that can get you pretty far. But when what you're doing isn't working, or you need that little bit of encouragement to get to that next milestone, a strong mentor can be the thing that gets you to the top of the ridge when you're ready to head back down the trail and sleep in the truck.

So when you're getting ready to hit the trail of Internet Marketing, keep in mind that the trip can be long and very difficult in spots, but so worth the view at the top. Everyone needs a great mentor to learn from in the beginning, so don't give up and don't be afraid to ask for a hand every now and then. Happy trails.
