The Magnificent Seven - Principles For Making Money Online

What are the secrets to making money online? With so many people trying to lure you in to buy their opportunity, what should you be looking for?

In my online quest to find good programs that are trustworthy and pay well, I've come across the good, the bad and the ugly. Coming from a journalism and media background, I am keen to check out, analyze and compare. But what I have found is there are some underlying principles to keep in mind if you want to have success and to have it fairly quickly.

Having checked out over 100 programs and having heard many a wise word from the Internet marketing gurus - including one of the co-founders of my main affiliate marketing program - I would like to highlight seven principles to keep in mind if you want real success in making money online.

I would like to grab the title of that classic Steve McQueen cowboy movie - so let us call them "the Magnificent Seven."

First shot - Make sure your business has unique products in high demand. Do your marketing properly and use your common sense. Maybe you love dogs and you plan to sell a book on dog training. Is there a big enough demand? Is your product unique? You will probably find there is not much of a market. Find a product or products in high demand that are special.

Second shot - Make sure the product has a lucrative compensation plan. Does it make much sense in focusing your efforts on an e-book that is only going to bring you in $10 per sale? Maybe it does if this is just one of several cheap products that you are selling. Yet it is best, if possible, to focus on products that bring you a good commission. What counts as good commission? Anything between $500 and $1,000 and beyond. Some might argue that $100 is good. Fine. However, make sure you can sell the product in sufficient volume. This is your up-front income. Make sure there is a good residual income too. What you want is a program you build and that then continues to pay you for years from the membership or other monthly fees - otherwise you may never get the chance to relax and take that dream vacation because you are always having to sell, sell, sell.

Third shot - Make sure the company or product is backed by a good marketing system. Okay, you may be a marketing whizz kid and you know the ropes, but for many, the main struggle is to get their offer noticed and to build a list and customer base. So try to make sure there is good backup geared to promoting the particular product or products you are selling.

Fourth shot - Make sure there is good training and support. Tied in with the marketing system should be lessons and advice on how to market the product and if necessary yourself to make the most of the opportunity. What is the training like? Is there a supportive community? Is your sponsor helpful? Can you get the answers you need?

Fifth shot - While you are at it, check out the company. Do your due diligence. Sure, Google the name but also be careful that anything that is actually successful will have its critics - often people who have either not tried the company out or if they have, they have not put sufficient effort into the program to make it work. Be careful of "fly-by-night" companies. Maybe they will not be around in six months.

Sixth shot - Does the opportunity have room to expand globally? If the product is piping hot fresh-baked bread in Florida, chances of you selling it further afield is small. Is the company open to expanding nationally and globally? If it is too local or restricted, then there may be few fish in the pond. If it is open for global expansion, maybe it offers the chance to tap into the sea of 1.8 billion Internet users, just over a quarter of the people on the planet.

Seventh shot - Does the company give back? Okay, most people would be lying is they said they were not in it for the money. Still, does the company give out to their local or the world community? If they have a program to sponsor some schooling for kids in Africa, maybe they have heart.

I am sure you can think of other points that you feel are important. However, these main principles are worth keeping in mind. I know there are people making good money on opportunities that don't completely align with these principles. Yet it is hard to go wrong with "The Magnificent Seven."
