Why Tweet?

The other day I was at a restaurant with my friends. We were dining on great food sipping wine and having some pretty in depth conversations. Then, the Twitter confusion conversation started. One of my friends asked what the point of Twitter is. I have about 30 followers and I cannot imagine why, she proclaimed. Another friend was mystified as well saying, who really cares what you are drinking in the morning or that you just gave your dog a bath. That was followed by; I use Twitter and face book but I am not sure what the big hoopla is about.

Being an avid tweeter, I said I used it primarily for business, which is not only true but also sad. I decided I needed to reevaluate my Twitter usage and perhaps provide some insight about the whole Twitter usage for those who are not using Twitter for business and they just do not get it.

So what is Twitter?

Twitter is microblogging. That means you only have a limited amount of characters on your key pad that you can use to post. In a regular blog, you can post paragraph after paragraph and it is good to use that for detailed information about what you are sharing with your readers. Microblogging puts little snipits along with links and it allows your readers to decide a bit easier if they want to go and read all you have to say.

Twitter is right now the most popular place for microblogging. Facebook is the next popular social network medium and works pretty much like Twitter. The biggest difference is in the lingo. What makes Twitter so popular is the fact that Twitter has developed a language and a world of its own. It is important it is to know if you are tweeting, a tweeter or if you are Twitterpated. Retweets are good and tweeples are peoples. Twididiots are really idiots. Twaring is caring.

Why use Twitter?
Most people have found Twitter to be a great tool for the market place. In the past, marketing like direct phone calls, email marketing and direct mail was a way for companies to communicate with the outside world bringing their message to the customer. This form of marketing which has been used for years is called outbound marketing. Now with so many ways to block that communication like caller I.D and spam blockers the companies need to find ways for the customers to find them and come knocking on their doorstep. Customers are searching the internet on places like Google; they are using blogs and social media to research their products before their purchase. People want to work or purchase from people that they know and trust, places like Twitter, face book, and linked in provide just that.

This new method of marketing is called inbound marketing and does just what it says. It brings customers to you and your business. Places like face book, Twitter and blogging spots are the platform to this new type of business advertising.

I just want to make friends!
What if you are not in business and you just want to get to know people? After all that is why you are using social media in the first place right? In order for you to get the most and give the most out of Twitter, you must think in terms of value. Most people could care less that you are having a cup of coffee, but if you mention you are having a cup of coffee and post a link to your favorite coffee recipe, now you are adding value to what you are saying. People are curious creatures and they are often curious about the goings on with you. That doesn't mean they want to hear about the mundane.

What should I tweet? What do you say on Twitter? What do you talk about?
Well, if you are out to just meet people and get to know them and have them get to know you then you can talk about anything. Keep in mind that people do not care that you are brushing your dog or taking a shower. Those are mindless blurbs of just saying stuff. However, you found a great new brush for your dog and it is making rover happy here is the link to where I bought it, adds value to what you are saying. Wow, I found a great new shampoo called xxx you can get it on sale right now at target, adds something of value. Talk about your favorite recipes and send them to your blog to check it out. Business or social what is the difference?

If you are using Twitter for business, a few different rules apply. If you are a person who all you do is give little uplifting details, after a while people are going to get board with you. If you are all business, people are going to see right through you and think you are a spammer. You cannot just be a broadcaster of information. You need to interact with the people you are following. People want to feel like they are being heard, they have an opinion and that opinion matters. People want you to be real. They want to know that you bought a great dog brush or shampoo. They want to be uplifted and encouraged and they want great free advice . When you are using social media for business, you must mix business with pleasure to get people to know, like and trust you, which will bring them to your business door.
