On Social Networks, 60 Is the New 30

When my father called me late last year and asked, "Hey, are you on the Facebook? I signed up.", I knew that the social network juggernaut had reached a tipping point.

It was not surprising when I stumbled across this bit of news this morning: Pew Internet reports that social network usage among the 55 - 64 age demographic grew 88% between April of 2009 and May of 2010.

So what does this mean for those of us leveraging social networks as a marketing medium? First off, Viagra will probably be giving us a lot more competition for advertising space. But more importantly, it means that social networks are no longer exclusively for bored teenagers and hip careerists. It means you can connect, on a personal level, with Frank Sinatra fans, Led Zeppelin fans and Justin Bieber fans alike, with acute messaging. It means that you no longer have to take out television ad space during Price is Right to hit the senior citizen market.

Pew Internet's report goes on to say that, during the same time frame, social network use among those 65 and older grew a full 100%. By comparison, the 18 -29-year-old bracket only grew 13%.

Make no mistake, however. The younger generation is still the largest and most active set on social media sites (18 - 29-year-olds make up 86% of registered users). Just remember that nowadays, as you plan your social media strategy, the retirees are out there, peering over their bifocals at your latest tweet.
