Some Insights Into Mobile Usability

Time:2010-09-08 19:08:12  Source:Ezinearticles  Author:Michael Mantel

As has been reported widely everywhere, mobiles have taken off in the last few years and is certainly the present and future of design for the web. But what is the state of usability for mobile? Mobiles are moving forward at such a speed that it is difficult for mobile designers to in fact keep up. There are new devices on the market all the time (this year alone has seen the launch of the Android and the iPad, to name two huge product launches) and there are more coming to market all the time with each market share uncertain. In addition, there is some question of what is a mobile device. For example, if you design an application for the iPad, some people will tell you that you are making a mistake; they will say there is no need for apps on the iPad as a web browser is perfectly fine for most usages.eeVFree Articles Directory | Hostsee.com

In recent usability studies we have gained important insights into how users on mobile devices are significantly different with significantly different expectations form users on desktop computers or other devices. Here are some of those insights:eeVFree Articles Directory | Hostsee.com

Age differences and expectations. The core group of the most active mobile users are much younger on average than average web users. While this seems intuitive if you look around, the fact is that this group is fundamentally different from desktop users; they operate with very different expectations and very different abilities. To give one example: this group is much less likely to want to use help in the form of a call center. They want to be able to help themselves quickly and easily. So make it easy for them to find it. A significant portion of this demographic is using their parents' money and may need their parents' approval or have their parents download apps or pay for service. They are more open to browsing online than older users.eeVFree Articles Directory | Hostsee.com

Login resistance is low and in fact logins are welcome. Mobile users are prone to understand the need for a login and may even believe that this increases their security while they are roving. In actual numbers, less than half expected to have a login but one in eight objected to having to login to use an a pro create an account. Logins are best if they are a mere passcode instead of the usual email or user name AND password. As with all things, mobile is a shortening and simplification of everything.eeVFree Articles Directory | Hostsee.com

Make summary information readily available. After login, offer summary information. Summary information post login was very welcome by users. For example: recent activity, time left available if it is terminal, downloads available etc. Offer them a summary of relevant information about their account with your app or website.eeVFree Articles Directory | Hostsee.com

Post-change verifications. Any change of account or information should be verified to users immediately on their mobile device in the mobile interface.eeVFree Articles Directory | Hostsee.com
