How Do You Build a Website to Make Money on the Internet - Part One

A website in one form or another is a must for the online entrepreneur. It might be as simple as a single page sales letter, through to a multiple page online catalogue with a built-in shopping cart. The question of how do you build a website, needs answering either way. To place a website on the internet, you require three things to be in place:

A domain name for your proposed website
A website hosting account
A web editor

Choosing a domain name is almost as hard as thinking of a name for your firstborn child! The very best advice I can give you is to think about WHAT your website content is going to be. Assuming you want to sell items from a particular category; let us say toys for babies, then you might be thinking of a domain name using the keywords 'toys' and 'babies'. A good domain name might then be 'toysforbabies.com'.

Notice that I've used the '.com' TLD (Top-Level Domain) as this is the most popular option for an internet business website. If possible, always try to register the '.com' for your new domain name. A typical yearly fee for your domain name is about $10.

Many domain name registrars also offer web hosting. This does not mean you HAVE to use the same company if you can find a better host elsewhere! However, you NEED a web host to connect the World Wide Web to your website. Typically this can cost between $10 and $15 every month for a good hosting account. Cheaper hosting is 'out there', but cheaper can mean less features, less support and less reliability. Buyer beware!

At this point let me briefly mention DNS (domain name servers). When you register a domain name, you get 'internet pointers' that tell your hosting company where to find your domain in cyberspace! Now if you get your domain name from the same company you buy your web hosting account from, then you have nothing further to do! However, if the hosting company is different then you will need to inform them of where to find your domain. Luckily, most hosting companies have tutorials showing you exactly how to easily accomplish this.

Lastly, a web editor is the software tool you will need to 'build' your new website. Here you have a number of options, both paid-for and free of charge. Without going into lots of retoric over which option is best, I am going to use a free to download and use editor, called Kompozer. Go to www.kompozer.net to download it. I have chosen Kompozer for no other reasons than it is free and easy to use.
